Indian Pipe [Monotropa uniflora] found on the Mountains to Sea Trail off the Blue Ridge Parkway in South Asheville, on 12 June 2013. It’s a member of the Indian Pipe (Monotropaceae) family. Wildflowers of the Carolinas, pages 230-231, states it’s “flower turns upright after pollination, an action described by the genus name Monotropa, meaning one turn.” It lacks chlororphyll and prefers rich moist soil in shade.
