Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon or Yellow Goatsbeard

Jack-go-to-bed-at-noon or Yellow Goatsbeard [Tragopogon pratensis] found in Edwards, New York, near the Town Barn, on 24 June 2013. It’s a member of the Aster (Asteraceae) family. Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 366-367, says that it comes out from summer to fall and can be found in fields on roadsides. The genus Tragopogon is derived from two Greek words tragos meaning “goat” and pogon meaning “beard.” National Wildlife Federation’s Wildflowers of North America, page 569, states the bracts on this species, listed as Meadow Salsify, are not as long Tragopogon dubius, being closer to the length of the petals.
