Pink Turtlehead[Chelone lyonii] found at NC Arboretum on 3 September 2013. It’s a member of the Figwort (Scrophulariaceae) family. Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 94-95, states that it blooms in moist thickets in late summer and fall, and that it escaped from cultivated gardens.

Queen Anne’s Lace or Wild Carrot is a member of the Carrot (Apiaceae) family. Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 220-221, states it blooms in summer and fall and is a “very common weed of dry fields and waste places.”

Carolina Buckthorn [Frangula caroliniana] found near White Pine Road in Fletcher, NC on 24 August 2013. This tree/shrub is a member of the Buckthorn (Rhamnaceae) family. Reader’s Digest North American Wildlife, page 317, says its habitat is “streambanks, rich bottomlands, [or] limestone ridges” and also lists it under the scientific synonym of Rhamnus caroliniana.

Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 376-377, says it blooms in late summer and fall and grows in rich soil. The guide lists it under its older scientific synonym of Actinomeris alternifolia.
