Garden Cornflower or Bachelor’s Button [Centaurea cyanus] found of Rockwood Road in Arden, on 8 June 2013. It’s a member of the Aster (Asteraceae) family. Wildflowers of the Carolinas, pages 24-25, states it’s “treasured for its rare pure blue color and often used in dried flower arrangements.”

Star Tickseed [Coreopsis pubescens] found at Fletcher Park on 5 June 2013. It’s a member of the Aster (Asteraceae) family. Wild Flowers of North Carolina, which names it just Coreopsis, page 201, states that it starts blooming in July, but this is obviously an earlier sighting, and it “grows on dry slopes and in open woods in our mountain and piedmont counties.”

Oxeye Daisy [Leucanthemum vulgare] found at Fletcher Park on 5 June 2013. It’s a member of the Aster (Asteraceae) family. Wildflowers of the Carolinas, pages 258-259, states it’s a “European import” and “found throughout the Carolinas, but occurs less frequently in South Carolina.”

Crown Vetch [Securigera varia] found at Fletcher Park on 1 June 2013. It’s a member of the Pea (Fabaceae) family. Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 66-67, states “it’s a sprawling plant of roadsides, extensively planted as a ground cover for steep banks” and lists it as Coronilla varia. These flowers were on the border of a field that was in the process of being plowed.

Wildflowers of the Carolinas, pages 178-179, states it can be found in dry disturbed areas, roadsides, old fields, and in sun. These flowers were on the border of a field that was in the process of being plowed.
