Hog Peanut or American Hogpeanut [Amphicarpaea bracteata] found near the Blue Ridge Parkway in South Asheville, just off the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, on 7 September 2014. It’s a vine and a member of the Pea (Fabaceae) family. Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 110-111 states that it blooms in summer and early fall in moist thickets.

Spiny Sow-Thistle [Sonchus asper] found near Fletcher Park on 1 September 2014. It’s a member of the Aster (Asteraceae) family. Wildflowers of the Carolinas, pages 354-355, states it blooms in spring, summer, and fall in dry soils and disturbed areas and that “cows avoid the annual because it is so spiny, allowing it to overrun fields.”

Red Morning Glory or Redstar [Ipomoea coccinea] found in a pasture near Fletcher Park on 1 September 2014. It’s a member of the Morning Glory (Convolvulaceae) family. Weeds of the South, pages 166, states that it is a “climbing or twining annual, vining herb” found in cultivated areas, fields, pastures, fencerows, roadsides, disturbed and waste areas.”

More About Velvetleaf

Velvetleaf [Abutilon theophrasti] photo was taken in a cornfield behind Fletcher Park on 1 September 2014. All About Weeds, by Edwin Rollin Spencer says this about the plant, on page 158:

Velvet-leaf, velvet-weed, Indian mallow, butter print, pie plant, Cotton-weed, and Indian hemp are all rather descriptive names of this common weed found in cornfields throughout the Mississippi Valley. The weed has velvety leaves, and its seed pod looks very much like the print block used by farm housewives for stamping their rolls of butter.

You can see the butter print pattern pretty well with these dried pods.

American Goldfinch in Thistles

This male American Goldfinch [Carduelis Tristis] was seen on Mills Gap Road in Arden, NC, on 21 August 2014.  I was on my way home from work and looked to my right to see this bird in the thistles. It’s a disturbed field which was previously the site of a Budweiser distribution center.

Partridge Pea [Chamaecrista fasciculata] found near Fletcher Park on 7 August 2014. It’s a member of the Pea (Fabaceae) family. Newcomb’s Wildflower Guide, pages 236-237, states it blooms in summer and fall in sandy fields. Newcomb’s lists it under the synonym of Cassia fasciculata.
